๐ฉโ๐ป My Role
As Vice President of Design at Samco Securities, I led the end-to-end design journey of the Kyatrade trading platform.
Team Leadership: Led a 12-member design team across UX, UI, research, and design systems.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborated closely with product managers, engineers, stakeholders, and the CEO to align business goals with user needs.
Design Vision: Established a design vision for Kyatrade as a next-generation trading app tailored for modern investors.
Process Leadership: Drove the design process from discovery research and problem framing to wireframes, high-fidelity UI, and usability testing.
โ Problems Identified
Despite being a well-recognized brokerage, Samco's earlier platforms faced several challenges:
Complex Onboarding: First-time investors struggled to complete KYC and account opening.
Cluttered Interfaces: Existing platforms overwhelmed users with data-heavy screens and jargon.
Limited Personalization: No clear differentiation for beginners vs. advanced traders.
Poor Discoverability: Users found it difficult to locate features like portfolio insights, margin calculator, or advanced charts.
Low Retention: Many first-time users opened accounts but rarely returned to trade.
๐ฏ Project Goals
We established clear objectives for the Kyatrade app:
Streamline Onboarding: Reduce drop-offs during account creation and KYC process.
Clean Trading Experience: Design an intuitive trading experience suitable for both beginners and experienced investors.
Goal-Based Investing: Enable wealth creation through goal-based investing, not just stock transactions.
Enhance Engagement: Improve retention with actionable insights, nudges, and simplified decision-making.
Scalable Design System: Create consistency across mobile and web products.
๐ฅ Target Users
We identified three primary user segments through interviews, surveys, and analytics:
First-time Investors (Age 22โ30)
New to the stock market.
Need hand-holding, tutorials, and simple UI.
Frustrated by jargon and complicated navigation.
Active Traders (Age 28โ40)
Familiar with trading, want speed, insights, and accuracy.
Heavy users of charts, live data, and portfolio trackers.
Expect high performance and reliability.
Long-term Investors (Age 30โ50)
Focused on wealth creation and portfolio growth.
Interested in goal-based investing, mutual funds, SIPs.
Seek trust, simplicity, and safety in app experience.
๐ ๏ธ Design Process
We followed a comprehensive design process:
๐ Discovery & Research
Competitive benchmarking with top brokers (Zerodha, Upstox, Groww).
User interviews (15+ participants across segments).
Identified friction points in onboarding, trade execution, and portfolio monitoring.
โ๏ธ Ideation & Wireframing
Sketched multiple onboarding flows to simplify KYC.
Explored dashboard concepts: quick snapshot vs. deep insights.
Conducted rapid prototyping for early usability feedback.
๐จ Design System & UI Exploration
Built a design system (colors, typography, components) optimized for clarity and trust.
Adopted a modern, minimal visual style aligned with fintech trends.
Created dark mode for power users.
๐งช Usability Testing
Conducted 3 rounds of moderated tests with diverse users.
Iterated on flows like fund transfer, order placement, and stock search.
Optimized for 2-tap trade execution.
๐จ Final Designs
Key highlights of the Kyatrade app design:
Onboarding Flow: Reduced from 7 steps to 3 key steps with contextual help.
Home Dashboard: Personalized based on trading behavior (quick portfolio view + actionable insights).
Stock Search & Watchlist: Smart suggestions, simplified watchlist management.
Trade Execution: Intuitive buy/sell sheet with instant order confirmation.
Goal-based Investing: Simple SIP and investment journeys for long-term investors.
Design System: Unified experience across mobile + web.

Integrating with legacy backend APIs without compromising speed.
Managing alignment across multiple stakeholders with differing priorities.
๐ Key Learnings
Key learnings from the project:
Contextual education (explaining features inline) significantly improves adoption.
Progressive disclosure works best in fintech โ show basics first, then advanced tools.
Design systems save time and ensure consistency in multi-product ecosystems.
Early user testing avoids costly rework later.
๐ฎ Future Improvements
Future improvements planned for the Kyatrade app:
AI-driven personalized investment recommendations.
Voice-enabled trading assistant for accessibility.
Gamified tutorials for first-time investors.
